Born in the Kham region of Tibet in 1895, Longchen Yeshe Dorje was a unanimously acclaimed secret yogi and discoverer of treasures. His principal Master was Jedrung Trinle Jampa Jungne, of whom Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche was also a disciple. The name Kangyur Rinpoche derived from the fact that he could recite by heart the one hundred and eight volumes of the Kangyur, which contain the whole of the Buddha's teachings. Having had a premonition of the Chinese invasion, Kyabje Kangyur Rinpoche was one of the first Masters to leave Tibet, bringing his precious books with him. He settled with his family in Darjeeling, India, in a modest house with a corrugated iron roof. That is where his Western disciples met him, for he never visited the West himself. Later on, he founded the Ogyen Kunzang Chökorling monastery on the heights above Darjeeling. Apart from his vast achievements, his erudition and his great compassion, which made him a great Master, Kyabje Kangyur Rinpoche was also a medical doctor and had a perfect understanding of all the traditional arts and crafts. He left his body in 1975, having asked his disciples to place themselves under the spiritual authority of Kyabje Dilgo Rinpoche. In response to the wishes of his revered father, Tsetrul Pema Wangyal Rinpoche, the eldest son of Kyabje Kangyur Rinpoche, founded three retreat centres in Dordogne. Numerous Westerners, including some direct disciples of of Kyabje Kangyur Rinpoche, completed traditional short and long retreats there, as they still do today.
