Born in the province of Amdo in 1935, His Holiness the Dalai Lama is both the spiritual and temporal leader of Tibet. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. The personification of compassionate action, His Holiness works unceasingly for the preservation and transmission of the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism, as well as the conservation of the cultural heritage of the Tibetan people. A tireless defender of universal human qualities over and beyond the various religious and philosophical expressions, His Holiness is also the head of the Tibetan government in exile.
